When it comes to politics, most celebrities it seems lean to the left. Certainly images of Sean Penn come to mind. Others include Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Micheal Moore among those famous for being very liberal minded. However, it may surprise you just how many celebrities are proud Republicans. At least, that’s the rumor.
1.) The old timers: Many famous names of Hollywood past are among the most well known right wingers. Cary Grant was a known Republican supporter in 1940 and Gary Cooper was a staunch republican supporter who helped campaign against the democratic party in 1944. Many of the most famous names of the 1930′s and 40′s were known or at least heavily rumored to be republican supporters. These names include John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and perhaps most legendary of all, Mr. NRA, Charlton Heston.
2.) Stars of more recent eras: Clint Eastwood’s career has spanned decades, and he’s been a republican supporter the entire time. The former Governor Arnold Schwarznegger was a republican officer in California. Other more contemporary stars who are rumored to be republican include Shannen Doherty of Brenda and Dylan 90210 fame as well as Spin City’s Heather Locklear.
3.) The surprises: There are also some celebrities you just wouldn’t think off hand are republicans. For instance, maybe you would never have thought of Rick Shroeder as a strong republican supporter? How about Hollywood favorite Denzel Washington, who is a rumored republican supporter. Other interesting celebrity names thought to be republican supporters include Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak. Threesome’s Stephen Baldwin is a known republican as is Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond. Turns out Hollywood isn’t completely right wing after all.
While political stances are by no means set in stone, just where certain celebrities political affiliations lay is always an enjoyable source of entertainment.
