Portland, Oregon is affectionately called the City of Roses, and has been called that for over a hundred years. In Portland, there’s a special selection of philanthropists and city-loving citizens called the Royal Rosarians. This group of people gathers to greet traveling dignitaries who come to their city, they do lots of fundraisers and represent Portland’s Rose Festival. They also travel to other cities representing Portland, and they have their hands in a myriad of things, all benefiting someone or the city.
One event they hold that everyone looks forward to, is the Newsmaker’s Banquet; the Rosarians and the public gather to break bread and honor those who made a significant impact in the city, somehow.
Politics, Society and Children
They also command the Metro Area Beautification Projects, where people gather and give to fund various clean-up projects and maintain part of the huge Washington Park Rose Gardens. They also hold an annual Rose Garden Contest, in which citizens compete to hold the title of Portland’s best home rose garden.
The Royal Rosarians also conduct a program called ROSES (Rosarians Offering Support to Encourage Students). This group provides funding for Portland Public School children to be able to take field trips and keep abreast of historic places and events. They offer donated tickets to events in case some children cannot afford to go, and provide the elementary schools principals with transportation for their students to have field trips of important learning.
They also provide a “Christmas for Kids” event, where underprivileged children can go Christmas shopping for members of their families. A Royal Rosarian goes shopping with each child to assist and advise in purchases.
This is a very small list of the important and significant things this charitable group of representatives does. If more information is wanted, don’t hesitate to see their website at RoyalRosarianFoundation.org.
